One such initiative that we are proud to support is the Coffee Kids Plan, a remarkable program created by students from Washington High School. This initiative helps disadvantaged children in Taiwan by selling drip coffee, featuring the artwork of students from local schools, with the proceeds going toward supporting educational programs in remote areas.
Drink Good Coffee, Help Kids
The concept behind the Coffee Kids Plan began with a volunteer activity in the summer of 2020, when a group of students from Washington High School participated in a program with a local organization in Houli, Taichung, that aids disadvantaged children. During their time volunteering, they discovered that many children in rural Taiwan struggle with basic educational needs and often lack the support of parents who are unable to care for them due to financial difficulties.
Determined to make a difference, these students launched the Coffee Kids Taiwan initiative. By collaborating with 30 remote schools across Taiwan, they collected student drawings, which are then printed on the covers of specially roasted drip coffee bags. Each bag of coffee is sold to raise funds for disadvantaged schools, providing financial support for students in need.
Supporting Education Through Coffee
Shing Shing Long was introduced to the Coffee Kids Plan when the principal and director of Yuemei Elementary School presented us with a gift of drip coffee. They shared the significance of this unique charitable project: the drawings on the coffee bags came from students at 27 elementary schools, including Yuemei. It was touching to learn that the proceeds from the coffee sales are directly used to support the education of students in rural areas, where resources are scarce.
After learning more about the project, we were deeply moved by its positive impact and the cycle of goodwill it fosters. At Shing Shing Long, we are proud to take part in this meaningful initiative by purchasing coffee products. Through our support, we are not only helping students in rural schools but also empowering young artists who can take pride in seeing their artwork featured on the coffee packaging. More importantly, we are supporting a program that aligns with our core values of community responsibility and corporate social engagement.
A Sustainable and Ethical Coffee Experience
The Coffee Kids Plan focuses on more than just helping disadvantaged children—it also emphasizes quality and ethical sourcing. The green beans used in the coffee are sourced from Nordic Approach, a renowned supplier of fair-trade coffee from Norway. These beans are carefully selected for their quality and are purchased at a fair price directly from local farmers, ensuring that farmers are paid fairly for their hard work and that financial exploitation is prevented.
The coffee is roasted with precision using the Probat UG22 roasting machine, which allows the roasters to maintain optimal control over time and temperature, ensuring a consistent, high-quality brew. Once roasted, the coffee is packaged using a specialized FUSO packaging machine, which preserves the coffee’s freshness by infusing the bags with nitrogen gas, preventing oxidation.
